Can ShipHunt be upgraded to ShipHunt Professional?

How do I install ShipHunt?

UNZIPPING THE DISTRIBUTION:
Using Windows Explorer, double click the file 'ShipHunt_Demo.zip' or 'ShipHunt_Live.zip' that you downloaded. If an unzip program is installed, it will prompt you through unzipping the software. If you do not have an unzip program you can find one by searching for 'WinZip' on the internet.

ShipHunt.prc requires the installation of MathLib.prc in order to run.
ShipHunt and MathLib are installed to PalmOS PDA's via the HotSync software and cradle. HotSync software is distributed by the makers of your device. For assistance with installing and/or troubleshooting HotSync issues refer to the Palm help web site at http://www.palm.com.

MathLib is a separate software library containing several math functions.
MathLib.prc is included for your convenience. It is not supported,
maintained, or altered by the makers of ShipHunt. For information on
MathLib search the web for "PalmOS MathLib".

1. Insure the PalmOS HotSync software is installed on your PC.

2. Using Windows Explorer, double-click the file 'ShipHunt.prc'. The
HotSync software should then display a window informing you that
ShipHunt will be installed at your next HotSync operation. Close
the HotSync window.

3. Using Windows Explorer, double-click the file 'MathLib.prc'. The
HotSync software should then display a window informing you that
MathLib will be installed at your next HotSync operation. Close
the HotSync window.

4. HotSync your device with your PC (usually by placing your PDA in the
HotSync cradle and pressing the HotSync button).

OPTIONAL INSTALLATION METHOD:
ShipHunt can also be installed via beaming ShipHunt.prc directly from one
PalmOS device to another. The PalmOS application launcher has the ability to beam files (including MathLib) to other devices. Tap 'menu' in the app launcher to use this method.

How do I drive the Submarine?

I recommend setting the options on 'Easy' for your first few tries. When you start ShipHunt, your are inside the submarine viewing the dials and gauges on the bridge. The sub starts out standing still 30 meters underwater (this prevents possible immediate collision with an enemy ship). Use the hardware buttons as follows:

Datebook... Turn Left
Address.... Turn Right
Up......... Ascend to surface
Down....... Dive
ToDo....... Engine Forward (and periscope left)
Memopad.... Engine Reverse (and periscope right)

HOLD DOWN THE HARDWARE BUTTONS FOR FASTER RESPONSE!

NOTE: ShipHunt Professional has the following on-screen navigation control in addition to using the hardware button controls:

Tap Heading............. To set new course
Tap Depth Meter......... To set new depth
Tap Periscope Arrows.... To control rudder or periscope
Tap Surface Arrows...... To control rudder
To Dive from Surface.... Use the hardware down button

Periscope depth is indicated by the 'P' on the depth meter. When you ascend to the 'P' the periscope will automatically appear.

The map shows your position relative to enemy positions.

There is more detailed help in the included one page manual (see links above). Help is also available from the built-in ShipHunt menus. Tap 'Menu' before starting the simulator and browse through the choices.

How do I target an enemy?

Keep in mind that enemy ships are moving targets. You must anticipate enemy speed and heading when attempting an offensive attack. Tap on the ship you are targeting in the periscope for detailed enemy information.

WWII torpedoes did not 'lock on' to their targets like today's torpedoes do. Often, WWII Submarine Commanders would fire a spread of 3 or 4 torpedoes hoping for 1 or 2 hits. Targeting was difficult in real life, and it can be difficult in ShipHunt as well. Fast moving targets that are far away will be the most difficult to hit.

Also: If you fire at a distant target that is tracking you (with sonar), then you turn and run, the enemy will also turn because he is tracking you. Thus, your torpedo may miss!

Why do I keep running out of fuel?

The diesel engine does not shut off by itself. You must remember to do this, just like a real life Commander had to. Fuel conservation is crucial to a successful campaign. Don't waste fuel by driving around a lot. At termination, the simulator assess your ability to return home. If you don't have enough fuel or and/or battery charge to make it home then you are penalized for being stranded.

All that being said, I gave in to multiple requests and added a slower fuel consumption rate in ShipHunt Professional anyway. But, there is a score bonus in the Professional version for using the 'fast' setting. |-D

How do I view the other screens?

This question comes from Captains who haven't figured out how to drive the Submarine yet. When the simulation start up, you are 30 meters submerged to prevent immediate collision with an enemy vessel. In the Original version of ShipHunt, the periscope view automatically pops up when you reach periscope depth and the surface view automatically displays when you surface the sub. Press the hardware 'Up' button and the Submarine will begin to ascend.

ShipHunt Professional has an 'Up Periscope' button that will toggle between the periscope and damage report views when the Submarine is at periscope depth.

NOTE: The Sub will surface and dive much faster if it is moving forward! Engage the screws (propellers) by tapping the 'fwd' button, or pressing the 'ToDo' hardware button.

Some newer devices have atypical hardware button configurations. ShipHunt Professional overcomes this with on-screen navigation controls (see the manual). Let me know if you would like to upgrade to ShipHunt Professional for this reason. I will forward a reasonable discount promotion code. Send email to:
Support@ShipHunt.com.

I entered a registration code, why won't the simulator start?

REGISTRATION INFORMATION:

ShipHunt registration is based on the DeviceID. A detailed description of how to find the DeviceID is included below. ShipHunt computes the registration code from the DeviceID at every startup and compares it to the registration code entered by the user. When properly registered, ShipHunt will enable all features and torpedoes.

Registration problems are caused by one of the following things (most common reason is listed first):

1. The registration code was entered incorrectly. The permanent registration code is 11 numbers. There are no letters in the code. Be sure to delete the phrase 'Enter Code Here.' before you enter your registration code.

2. Developer has incorrect DeviceID (verify your DeviceID matches the one I have on file, case does not matter here). If there are spaces in the name make sure the number of spaces is reported correctly. Make sure you don't get the letter 'i' mixed up with the letter 'l'. If the DeviceID is incorrect please forward the correct one to
Support@ShipHunt.com (see instructions to locate DeviceID below).

HOW TO LOCATE THE DEVICE ID:

In ShipHunt there are 2 ways to locate the DeviceID.

1. The DeviceID (also called HotSyncName) is displayed on the registration screen. Excessively long Device ID's may be truncated. This causes registration problems. Find your correct Device ID by following the next procedure.

2. Start the HotSync program on your PDA device. The HotSync program is usually found in the 'System' folder (select 'System' from the upper right drop-down menu on your devices main screen). Then tap on the program called 'HotSync'. The HotSyncName will be displayed in the upper right corner of the screen. If it is not, this indicates that you have never HotSync'ed your device. You will be prompted for a HotSyncName the first time a HotSync operation is performed.

I will do whatever is necessary to assist you through this. Let me know if you are still having registration problems by sending email to:
Support@ShipHunt.com.

I received my registration code, but where do I enter it in?

If there is no place to enter your registration code on the registration screen then you are running the demo version of ShipHunt or ShipHunt Professional. Download and install the full ShipHunt_Live version from the downloads page. For ShipHunt Professional, you should have received a download link for the full version with your registration code purchase.

I purchased a registration code, why didn't I receive it yet?

Registration codes are usually send out within minutes of purchase by the ShipHunt automatic registration processing database. Here's how it works:

1. Customer purchases ShipHunt or ShipHunt Professional from distrubutor.
2. Distributor sends purchase advice email to developer (me).
3. Developers database processes incoming email every few minutes and automatically emails registration codes to customer.

Problems that sometimes happen, in order of their occurrence rate:

DeviceID was not included in purchase email advice from distributor for whatever reason. In this case you will receive an email requesting your DeviceID. Be sure to carefully follow the instructions for 'fastest processing' in the email or the automatic registration system will not be able to respond to your reply. Improper automatic registration attempts are handled manually ASAP.

Customer uses whitelist spam filtering. Please add
'John@comclin.net' to your list of allowed email senders. -or- Check your 'suspect spam' folder for an email with the word 'ShipHunt' in the subject line.

Customer has s HOTMAIL email address. This is a frequent frustration for customers. I don't know why, but email to HotMail accounts sometimes does not get through. If at all possible, please provide a different email address.  If you requested to have your registration code re-sent, I have re-sent it, probably several times.

Customer supplied a different email address when purchasing. ShipHunt registration codes are sent to the email you entered at time of purchase. Let me know if you need the registration code to be sent to a different email address.

Developer is taking a nap... Just kidding. I never do this. :-)

Developers kids are going nuts!... Now, this DOES happen,... too frequently! |-D

Over 98% of all purchases are responded to on the same day. If you haven't received anything from me yet, please check again in the evening before sending more email. Online distributors require me to respond within 48 hours. I will make every effort to do way better than that. If you haven't heard from me within 32 hours, I have most certainly attempted to contact you by now. Try to contact me again at
Support@ShipHunt.com.

Thanks for your patience. |-)

Can ShipHunt be upgraded to ShipHunt Professional?

ShipHunt Professional is a separate product from ShipHunt.  Registration codes are not transferable from one product to the other.  Existing ShipHunt customers can expect to receive an attractive discount offer via email for upgrading to ShipHunt Professional.
